Artist and experimental musician Robyn Steward came by the Heart n Soul studio to have a look and ended up recording a song. Listen below -
Read below for information on how we did it...
She plays trumpet predominantly and is always looking for new ways to expand the palette sounds she has available. We did some recordings of her playing and used the Looper feature in Ableton which was really fun.
Then after looking at a few things in the studio the Ableton Push leapt out as the thing we were going to use as it was "very friendly" as Robyn said! We decided to create a sample bank of the recordings we had just made by using the Drum Rack feature in Ableton Live. Robyn learnt to edit her recordings and put them in the Drum Rack, we added delay, reverb and EQ to some of the individual samples and also played around with the pitch for some of them.
Robyn then used the Ableton Push to improvise a base track to work from...
After this extra layers of trumpet and vocals were added, using delay and reverb to place them within the piece. The idea of a cave came up and Robyn improvised a story about this, little people and buses in one take. This was hard-panned right and we did a quick mix to the whole thing, making sure it had the right feeling. We managed to go from a studio visit to a finished track in under 3 hours!
